BEYONCÉ | RENAISSANCE
Having previously worked with Beyoncé on Homecoming and directing the On the Run II world tour, it was exciting to return as Live Film Director for the concert capture of Renaissance.
The scale and creative ambition of the production were unmistakably Beyoncé. Working closely with Parkwood and many familiar collaborators, we spent considerable time testing camera systems, anamorphic lenses and different approaches to image making, developing a visual language that could complement the world she had created on stage and its celebration of Black and queer dance music, disco, house and club culture.
A production of this scale inevitably presents challenges, but those limitations often became opportunities to push the filmmaking further and find new ways of translating the spectacle, detail and intimacy of the show to the screen.
Produced in part through Southpaw Productions, Mark Ritchie directed the live performance cameras that became part of Beyoncé’s larger film, which ultimately brought together the concert, its creation and the extraordinary world surrounding Renaissance. It was a privilege to collaborate with the Parkwood team again and to be part of a film we were all incredibly proud of.
