Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé | Coachella + Netflix

Production Services + Cinematography

HOMECOMING: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ Homecoming unexpectedly pulled me back into my roots as a cinematographer. By then I had transitioned fully into directing, but I returned from Europe to work with Beyoncé and her team to help craft the visual language of the performance that would ultimately become known as Beychella. The ambition was extraordinary. The choreography, staging and sheer scale of what Beyoncé created were second to none, made even more challenging by the realities of mounting it inside a working music festival. My longstanding relationship with Coachella helped us navigate that world while we worked to bridge two disciplines that, at the time, were only beginning to truly converge: cinematic filmmaking and live broadcast. We approached cameras as part of the storytelling, looking for images and moments that could feel composed and cinematic while still existing within the immediacy of a live performance. Looking back, Beychella felt like a genuine turning point. It demonstrated what festival filmmaking could become when the performance, production and cameras were conceived with the same level of intention. The world was not simply watching a Coachella headliner. It felt like we were watching the language of live music filmmaking move forward in real time.
